Welcome to Tomar — a peaceful riverside town with a proud and storied past. Known for its Templar roots, lush landscapes, and laid-back charm, Tomar is one of central Portugal’s most fascinating places to explore.
Founded in 1160 by Gualdim Pais, a knight of the Order of the Templars, Tomar grew around the Convent of Christ, which remains the town’s crown jewel. Later, under the Order of Christ, Tomar played a key role in Portugal’s Age of Discoveries, guiding and supporting the explorers who set out to map the world.
Today, Tomar offers visitors a perfect mix of history, nature, culture, and fun — all at an easygoing pace. Whether you’re here to dive into the past or relax by the river, here’s your guide to the best things to see and do during your stay.
Top Things to See and Do in and Around Tomar
1. Convent of Christ (Convento de Cristo)
A must-see and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore cloisters, the iconic round Templar church (Charola), and the stunning Manueline window. It’s a journey through nearly 900 years of Portuguese history. You can walk up to the Convent, but it is, of course, a bit of a climb. Alternatively, book a Tuk Tuk to get you there.
2. Tomar Castle
Standing beside the convent, this 12th-century castle offers sweeping views of the town and surrounding countryside — a peaceful, scenic walk through medieval stone walls.
3. Aqueduto dos Pegões
This impressive 16th-century aqueduct once carried water to the convent. Stretching over 6 km, its grand arches are a striking sight. You can walk along part of it or admire the view from the base near the convent — a great photo stop and a peaceful place to visit.
4. Explore Local Life
Wander the narrow lanes, browse local crafts, and stop at a pastelaria to try Fatias de Tomar — a sweet, rich local dessert made from egg yolks and sugar. It’s unlike anything else!
5. Tuk lovers
Go to Praça da Republica and find a tuk tuk for hire. They will show you around town and take you up the hill to the convent if you wish.
6. Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes (National Forest of the Seven Hills)
Right below the convent, this serene park is perfect for picnics or walks through shaded woodland. Locals come here to relax, and it’s a hidden gem just at the end of our street.
7. Praça da República & São João Baptista Church
Tomar’s central square is great for a coffee break or people-watching. The church, with its Gothic and Manueline features, is worth stepping inside to admire.
8. Synagogue of Tomar & Jewish Museum
Visit one of Portugal’s oldest synagogues and learn about the important Jewish community that once thrived here. A quiet, thoughtful stop full of history.
9. Nabão River Walk & Mouchão Park
Enjoy a stroll along the riverside, across quaint bridges, and through leafy Mouchão Park. Kids love the old water wheel, and it’s a peaceful spot for reading, resting, or having an ice cream.
10. Museu dos Fósforos (Match Museum)
A quirky and fascinating little museum tucked inside the Convent of São Francisco, the Match Museum features one of the world’s largest collections of matchboxes and matchbooks — over 40,000 from more than 100 countries. It’s a charming stop for curious minds and a great example of how even the smallest objects can tell big stories.
